I HAVE PUT TOO MUCH GLUE ON THE WALL, HOW DO I FIX IT?

Gluing is just as important as cutting the wallpaper to the right size or making sure that the wallpaper adheres perfectly to the surface. It is therefore important to apply just the right amount. The problem arises when too much glue is spread on the wall, as it is easy for small bumps to appear or for the glue to overflow from the joints.

This is sometimes unavoidable, especially when the first strips of wallpaper are applied. It should be borne in mind that the surface to be wallpapered will always absorb some of the adhesive. But until the first few strips are applied, you will not know to what extent. The logical tendency is to apply too much glue to the wall, which will then have to be removed in one way or another.

What to do if there is too much glue on the wall?

The basic advice is to observe the behaviour of the surface as you glue and to do it in small quantities. This is the best way to avoid applying too much glue on the wall. If you see that the substrate is asking for more, simply add more. And, if there is an excess, it can be spread over the surface with the brush.

Do not forget that the drying time is long. Therefore, if the excess glue is spread even on the space occupied by other strips, nothing should happen. You will soon realise how much glue the surface will tolerate and you can adjust as necessary to avoid having too much glue on the wall.

If there really is too much glue left over and we see that there is too much glue on the wall even to spread it out, we can always pick up the excess with the same glue brush or by running a small spatula over the surface. It is advisable, however, to do this carefully so as not to damage the surface.

What happens if the excess overflows when smoothing and reaches areas where there are no plans to put wallpaper? In this case, we should immediately remove the glue from the wall by wiping it off with a cloth slightly dampened with warm water. It will easily remove the excess adhesive.

Another problem is that we realise that there is too much glue on the wall when we have already put up the strip of paper. Removing it is not always the best option. To avoid air bubbles, the surface should be smoothed with a brush, spatula or cloth.

You can always work on this part so that, in addition to the air bubbles, the excess glue comes out at the edges if too much glue has really been applied to the wall. However, it is advisable to remove it as soon as possible once it is visible on the surface with a cloth or sponge.

The importance of a good gluing technique

It is important to note that it is important to observe when the glue tolerates the surface. This is the best way to avoid applying glue to the wall. But there are other factors to take into account. One of them is the preparation of the product. If there are lumps, there will be areas where it will spread perfectly and others where there will be a residue that will need to be removed.

Another important factor is the brush used for gluing. Not just any brush will do. It must always be a specific brush for this purpose. They are slightly thicker than conventional ones and allow you to spread the product better, thus avoiding areas where there is excess glue on the wall.

Do not soak the bristles along their entire length and make sure to spread the product very well are also tips that should be taken into account to avoid excess glue on the wall that could ruin the finish. By following these recommendations, there will be no problem.
